Harold Ross (1892–1951), a miner's son from Colorado, wanted to create a magazine that was different from popular titles such as The Saturday Evening Post and Life. Van Doren gives viewers just enough of Thurber's writings and cartoons to whet the appetite and leave them wanting more.The first issue of The New Yorker, with Rea Irvin's monocled dandy on the front cover, appeared on February 21, 1925, and it was by no means clear that this new magazine would succeed. Interviews with colleagues and fans of Thurber pay tribute to one of America's leading humorists and establish his place among American writers of the 20th century. Their book Is Sex Necessary was the first prose work published by either writer, and their alliance continued as both worked for The New Yorker under founding editor Harold Ross. ![]() Van Doren follows Thurber and his wife, Althea, when they leave the Midwest for the sophistication of New York City and Thurber's eventual friendship and collaboration with E.B. He begins with Thurber's childhood in Columbus, OH, where a game of William Tell with his brother Robert left Thurber with damaged vision.
